Our Impact
When people can get legal help, lives change, laws work, courts work, and communities thrive.
30 years of Civil Legal Aid for Washington
Since 1996, NJP has grown from a four-office startup into Washington’s largest provider of civil legal aid, reaching millions of people with resources and representation. When we help people keep their homes, income, safety, and stability, then wages, benefits, and savings stay with families and in local economies. When we successfully challenge unjust laws and practices in court, the justice system is fairer for everyone.

Anita’s Story
Fighting unjust debt collection
Anita Belcher was working full time and raising three of her grandchildren when a quarter of her wages were suddenly garnished.
Anita was a victim of “sewer service,” a common practice in which debt collectors falsely claim they’ve notified someone of a lawsuit, then win by default. With her NJP attorney, Anita proved the collector was at fault, not her. Cases like hers show that when people can show up and fight back, debt buyers often walk away.

A Smart Investment for Washington
$1
$7
$1 invested in legal aid returns $7 in benefits to the communities we serve
Legal aid doesn’t just help individuals. It strengthens the whole community and saves public resources in the long run.
- Keeps people working and stable. When people can keep their housing, income, and safety, they are better able to stay in the workforce and less likely to need emergency support.
- Saves public dollars. Legal aid reduces costs for homelessness services, domestic violence response, and emergency health care, and it helps preserves tax revenue.
- Eases the strain on courts. Resolving issues early means fewer costly court proceedings and a system that runs better for everyone.
Local Presence, Statewide Impact
NJP serves every county in the state, and the cities and towns in between. From Colville to Vancouver, from Bellingham to Pullman our offices and our advocates work across the communities we serve. That reach amplifies our impact.

A problem that surfaces in Spokane may be one we’ve already learned to tackle in Moses Lake. Because our advocates appear in courts all over Washington, they spot trends early, share what works, and see the larger, systemic problems affecting people across the state – and develop legal strategies to tackle them.
