Why the change?
Thirty years in, NJP’s legal services and information have benefited millions across our state. And this work has taught us a great deal about the evolving legal needs of the communities we serve, and about using the law to benefit not just individual clients but whole communities. Civil legal aid is the bridge between the promise of the law and the ability of everyday people to exercise their rights.
These changes are not happening in a vacuum. The world around us is changing, too. Many people, especially those already struggling to make ends meet, feel growing uncertainty about their futures and their children’s futures. In times like these, knowing where to turn matters more than ever.
Our hope is that our new look and website are more accessible, welcoming, and transparent. We want every Washingtonian to know where to find help, assured they’ll be met with respect. And we want our communities, funders, and policymakers to understand the breadth, depth, and impact of our work.
What a new look doesn’t change
Our values are constant. We do this work in ways that fight injustice and strengthen communities. Everything we do is grounded in values of community, dignity, and equity.
Unfortunately, the justice gap also hasn’t changed. If anything, it has grown larger. Funding for civil legal aid falls far short of the need, and many people with serious legal problems still can’t get help.
Fortunately, we’re part of a network of community partners, funders, pro bono attorneys, and people all across Washington who know that legal aid isn’t an extra. It’s fundamental to a fair legal system and to America’s promise of equal justice for all.
And underlying it all is one more truth: we couldn’t do this without you.
