President Trump's budget proposal for 2026 threatens to eliminate the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), placing crucial legal protections at risk for veterans, seniors, and families across Washington State and nationally. LSC provides funding for 130 legal aid organizations in all 50 states, including Northwest Justice Project (NJP).
In Washington, NJP is the only LSC recipient. If Congress approves the proposed cut, NJP stands to lose $10 million in federal funding – nearly 20% of our budget. Funding from LSC allows NJP to provide legal help to thousands of people who cannot afford a lawyer when faced with facing life-altering legal crises: – evictions, foreclosures, domestic violence, loss of benefits, workplace discrimination, and crushing medical and consumer debt.
When individuals who can’t afford a lawyer are denied access to justice, families and communities suffer as they grow farther and farther away from the promise of equal justice.
We cannot take legal aid for granted because we know that access to the legal system is key to a thriving democracy. Washington State has invested in civil legal aid, and federal funding remains critical to ensuring services continue and grow. With your support, NJP will persist in fighting for the rights of every client, adapt to new challenges, strengthen communities and protect human dignity.
