Pamela: Rural ICU nurse regains essential home care services after health crisis

"I live an hour out of Spokane in a town of about 2,000. It is hard to get people like caregivers to drive up here. Attorneys are few and far between. It is very rural, but I manage.

But by serving small communities like mine, Northwest Justice Project saved my life. I had an infection, was in a lot of pain, and was recovering from two surgeries. I was receiving essential home health services to help me manage.

The agency cut my hours. From 120 per week to 70. Then to 40. This was after my surgeries! I couldn't cook; I lost 60 pounds. Before my health issues, I was a hard-working ICU nurse specializing in intensive care. So, I know the medical industry well. This wasn't right! I filed for a court date, but I was told that I should have an attorney. But, unfortunately, they're hard to find around here.

So, I called Northwest Justice Project for help. Perfect timing! I got an attorney the day of the meeting with the agency! My NJP attorney helped me navigate the process. But—let me tell you—the words "I have an attorney" go a long way! When you can't cook for yourself, you can't eat, and you're in a lot of pain…you finally say, "that's enough…I need help." That is where I found myself.

NJP negotiated for me and worked with the home community health agency to restore my care.

It is hard to find the energy to fight when you're so tired and worn out. But my attorney encouraged and helped me. She relieved my stress and went to battle for me. I didn't have to fight so hard because NJP picked it up and did it for me. My attorney and NJP are my heroes.

My health issues were so bad that I felt like I had no other place else to go. Some people fall through the cracks, especially in rural communities. I had lost my health and my job. But I am doing better now.

I am so grateful for NJP and my attorney."
