An opinion piece by Washington State Supreme Court Justice Salvador A. Mungia; Bill Pickett, co-chair of the Washington Equal Justice Coalition; and Ronald Flagg, president of the Legal Services Corporation argues against a proposal in Congress to defund the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in the 2026 appropriations bill. The authors highlight the impact in Washington State, where Northwest Justice Project is the sole recipient of LSC funds. They show how the elimination of the LSC would be devastating to vulnerable populations including seniors, veterans, and working families who rely on civil legal aid services. They emphasize that LSC's $560 million appropriation represents only 0.035% of the domestic budget but provides crucial support to legal aid programs nationwide, with research showing that "legal aid returns $7 for every $1 invested, on average."
LSC funding currently comprises about 20% of NJP's budget, and LSC’s elimination would force NJP and 129 similar programs nationwide to lose essential resources. As the authors note, "If Congress eliminates LSC funding, fewer seniors, veterans and families facing eviction will receive the legal help they desperately need." The impact on NJP would be severe, as it would lose flexible operating support that allows the organization to respond quickly to emerging community needs, potentially leaving thousands of people across every congressional district without access to essential legal services each year.
