NJP in the News: Farmworker Victory in Yakima Valley

Farmworkers in Yakima Valley who were abruptly fired from Cornerstone Ranches—and replaced by H-2A guest workers—have achieved a crucial consent decree. Through legal action first initiated by Northwest Justice Project (NJP) and a broader enforcement action by the Washington State Attorney General’s Office, they have secured a monetary settlement and Cornerstone’s agreement to implement fair hiring practices for local workers with deep roots in Yakima Valley. The company had unjustly fired or forced out local farmworkers, replacing them the next day with temporary foreign workers.

Key Facts:

  • Local workers, young and older displaced.

  • Workers with up to 25 years of experience were fired without warning.

  • Multigenerational and extended families in the community affected (50+ workers).
