Lifelong friend protects revered Tribal Elder

Manny is a pillar of his community; everyone knows and reveres him. Manny would walk for days to visit all the Indian Nations. He taught children traditional dances and stories.

Unfortunately, years of severe alcoholism and progressing Parkinson’s exacted a toll on Manny. After a brush with death, his life-long friend Larry was able to help Manny move into a convalescent center.

Manny was no longer considered competent to write his own checks, so the Tribal Court appointed Larry as his legal guardian. The bank wouldn’t recognize the court order, and unpaid bills from the nursing home started piling up. Manny was days away from eviction.

Larry reached out to NJP for help. Securing guardianship takes time, but since there was no opposition to this court action, NJP was able to help obtain the order within 24 hours. Larry was able to pay the nursing home and secure Manny’s ongoing care and support.
