Client Story: Matthew

"My son Matthew is 28 and a member of the Spokane tribe. He also has Down Syndrome. Raising him has been a joy. But Matthew’s father passed away from cancer and soon after I was also diagnosed with a very aggressive and rare breast cancer. Matthew had a really hard time when his daddy died.

At this same time, we received a $5,000 bill from the agency that provides Matthew’s support services. Even though I used to work there as a case manager, I just couldn’t make any sense of it. I tried a number of times to find out what the bill was about, but no one at the agency could tell me.

Northwest Justice Project helped me navigate the legal system and fight the charge. I was literally fighting for my life. When you have to do that, you can’t fight for anything else. My NJP attorney was a great support. I felt like I could trust her to fight the battle that I could not.

I beat that nasty cancer, by the way! Matthew and I are back to playing board games and spending our days together as a family."
