Alan: A Military Aviator’s Fight for Rights
I come from a long line of military pilots, so when I graduated from Indiana University in 1968 with the Vietnam War still going on, I decided to enter the Marine Corps. After earning my commission, I headed to Pensacola, Florida for basic flight training. I was fortunate enough to make it into the jet […]
A mother fights for justice in wake of racist attacks
A Black 8th grader in Vancouver was violently attacked at school by a student who had earlier harassed him with racial slurs. Although administrators had been warned the attack was coming they did nothing to protect him. Instead, the school suspended and then expelled him. After a years-long fight, NJP gathered the evidence to win a settlement that cleared his record and included money and staff training.
Luci: Sexual assault survivor awarded veteran’s benefits
The Department of Defense released sobering statistics last year about sexual assault in the military. They found that only about 25 percent of service members who experienced unwanted sexual contact in 2023 reported the assault. Krystal Jeffries: Fighting eviction and landlord fraud video
Chad Barrett: from jail to justice
After learning about a chance to vacate my record of drug charges, I reached out to Northwest Justice Project (NJP) for assistance. Attorney Therese Norton jumped into action. She and contract attorney Megan Yeates with the Office of Public Defense filed a petition to clear the charges and have thousands of dollars of Legal Financial Obligations (LFO’s) refunded to me. We succeeded on both accounts. Thanks to NJP, I’ve received nearly seven thousand dollars back from the state and feel relieved to finally leave my past behind me.

Michael Shapsnikoff overcomes addiction and eviction
After overcoming addiction and working to get his life back, Michael Shapsnikoff was unable to secure housing because an eviction was part of his rental history, and many landlords screen out prospective tenants with an eviction record.
As Michael pursued recovery, he reached out to Northwest Justice Project (NJP) for help. NJP worked with Michael to petition the court for an Order of Limited Dissemination (OLD), which removes an eviction from a person’s rental history. The court granted the OLD in 2023, clearing the path for Michael to find stable housing.
